Boys’ Team
The boys swim team began in 1970 under legendary coach Leon Reed. The team has won 12 Section V titles and over 15 Monroe County Division championships. Reed and long-time coach Steve Dzina are members of the Spencerport Sports Hall of Fame.
The 2009-2010 squad carried on the team’s rich tradition. The boys finished 7-4 and won Monroe County Division II with an undefeated record. The boys were led by captains Mike Spiegel (distance) and Chris Plummer (breaststroke). Spiegel led the team in scoring, while Plummer finished with the 3rd fastest 100 breaststroke time in the history of the swim program.
The boys stayed strong throughout the season thanks to incredible depth. The entire team, all 24 swimmers/divers, qualified for sectionals. The team consistently outscored opponents by finishing 2-3-4 in dual meet events. The Ranger relays were also highly successful. The team won the 10-team Hilton Invitational on the strength of placing its “A” and “B” squads in the top 8 of all three relay events.
The team’s success flowed directly from its 11 seniors. All 11 were key point scorers throughout the season. Spiegel, Plummer, and Jake Ammons were 4-year varsity swimmers and capped off their tremendous careers in style. The Rangers also got a huge boost from diver Kristian Barbato. Kristian joined the team as a senior having no experience in diving. He finished the season as a key point getter along with junior Enrico Iraci and finished 16th at the class A sectionals.
Even though the squad is graduating 11 seniors they are looking at reloading and not rebuilding. Juniors Tyler Nichols, Dan Costa and sophomores Austin Nau and Derek Spath were all sectional finalists. Nichols was the 2nd leading scorer on the team and is extremely versatile. The team also saw all of its JV swimmers qualify for sectionals and will look for contributions from its youth next season.
