Girls Top Times 2009

The girls swimming and diving team started competition in 1974 and has produced some incredible performances for three decades. Alumni Amy Brown and Emily Knight have posted some of the strongest swims in Section V history.

The 2009 team put forth the highest winning percentage in team history. The squad  finished 8-3, placing 2nd in Monroe County Division II.  It was the highest league-finish in the history of the program and saw tremendous individual performances throughout the season.

The team was led by captains Kaitie Buckwell (distance) and Amanda Clapper (diving).  Clapper finished 3rd in the Class A Sectionals and anchored the Rangers strong diving corps.  Buckwell finished as the most accomplished swimmer in the history of the swim program.  She won the 200 freestyle at Sectionals in a repeat performance while finishing 2nd in the 100 freestyle at the same meet.  Kaitie was undefeated in dual meets and finishes with school records in the 100, 200, and 500 freestyles, the 200 IM, and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

The Rangers rode to their great record on the backs of 11 seniors.  In addition to Clapper and Buckwell the team netted lots of points from Emma Cromp (backstroke), Melanie Spath (sprint), and Kelsie Bunce (IM).  Those five seniors finished as 4-year varsity athletes and formed the backbone of the program for a long time.

Juniors Rachel Coia (fly) and Emma Rakestraw (distance) and Freshman Samantha Walker (breaststroke) and Erica King (sprint) were also leading scorers.  While the team is graduating a huge core of swimmers and divers, the Rangers remain confident in future success.  The JV team finished undefeated at 12-0 and the Rangers expect many of those athletes to immediately step into key roles on the Varsity squad in 2010.
